Hydraulic Seal Types & Applications
Find the types of sealing components commonly used in cylinders, valves, connections and rotating equipment. Each entry explains its purpose, typical use and what to check before specifying a replacement.
Hydraulic Seals & Assorted Profiles
Assorted rod, piston and static seal profiles used in fluid-power equipment. The correct replacement depends on the groove, pressure direction, fluid and dimensions.
Hydraulic Rod Seals
Designed to control fluid leakage along a reciprocating cylinder rod and support reliable extension and retraction.
Hydraulic Piston Seals
Help limit internal leakage across the piston so pressure can drive the cylinder through its working stroke.
Wiper & Scraper Seals
Remove external dirt, dust and moisture from the moving rod before it enters the cylinder sealing system.
Hydraulic O-Rings
Round-section elastomer seals for many static hydraulic joints; some designs also use them as energizers behind other seals.
Back-Up & Anti-Extrusion Rings
Support O-rings or other elastomer elements near clearances where pressure could force the softer seal into a gap.
Wear Rings & Guide Rings
Guide rods and pistons, take lateral loads and reduce metal-to-metal contact inside hydraulic cylinders.
U-Cup Hydraulic Seals
A lip-style seal profile often used for reciprocating rod or piston applications, selected by pressure direction and gland geometry.
PTFE Step & Sliding Seals
Sliding sealing elements that may pair a PTFE-based ring with an energizer for suitable low-friction cylinder designs.
Hydraulic Buffer Seals
Used in selected rod sealing arrangements to help manage transient pressure loading ahead of the primary rod seal.
Chevron / V-Packing Sets
Multiple V-shaped packing elements assembled as a sealing stack for suitable reciprocating hydraulic equipment.
Rotary Shaft Oil Seals
Rotary lip seals used at suitable shaft interfaces to limit lubricant escape and contamination entry.
Bonded Sealing Washers
Washer-style seals with an elastomer bonded to a metal ring for appropriate threaded hydraulic connections.
Hydraulic Cylinder Seal Kits
Application-specific groups of compatible sealing and guiding components intended for defined cylinder rebuilds.

Why Seal Matching Matters
An incorrectly matched seal may leak, extrude, wear early or interfere with movement. Use these checks before requesting a replacement.
What to send with your enquiry
- Photo of the removed seal and its cross-section
- Equipment make, model and cylinder or component ID
- Rod, bore and groove dimensions where available
- Hydraulic fluid type, approximate temperature and pressure

Common reasons seals fail
- Contaminated fluid or damaged wiper seals
- Incorrect profile or installation orientation
- Rod scoring, misalignment or excessive side load
- Wrong compound for the fluid or operating conditions
- Damaged grooves, excess clearance or pressure spikes
- Installing new seals without addressing damaged hardware
Common Hydraulic Seal Materials
These are broad material families, not universal compatibility approvals. The exact compound and supplier specification determine suitability for your equipment.
| Material | General characteristics | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| NBR (Nitrile Rubber) | Common elastomer option for many oil-based hydraulic sealing applications. | Fluid compatibility, compound grade, temperature and hardness. |
| Polyurethane (PU / TPU) | Used in many rod, piston and wiper designs where wear resistance is important. | Seal design, fluid, temperature and abrasion conditions. |
| PTFE-based materials | Used in suitable low-friction sliding and energized sealing profiles. | Filler grade, energizer, groove, pressure and surface finish. |
| FKM (Fluoroelastomer) | Selected for certain applications requiring specific chemical or heat resistance. | Actual fluid formulation and compound-specific compatibility. |
| Engineering composites | Commonly used for guiding and wear-control components in cylinders. | Side loads, clearances, temperature and mating surfaces. |
Hydraulic Seals FAQs
What is the difference between a rod seal and a piston seal?
A rod seal limits hydraulic fluid leakage along the rod to the outside. A piston seal limits fluid transfer from one side of the piston to the other. The profiles and pressure directions differ.
Why do hydraulic cylinders need wiper seals?
Wipers remove dirt and moisture from the returning rod, reducing the chance of contaminants entering the cylinder and damaging other seals or surfaces.
Can I order seals using only the machine model?
The model can help, but a reliable match often also requires cylinder identification, seal dimensions, profile photographs and operating conditions. Different revisions may use different parts.
Are O-rings and back-up rings used together?
In some designs, yes. A back-up ring can support an O-ring against extrusion into a clearance under pressure, but the arrangement depends on the specific groove and pressure direction.
Which material is best: NBR, polyurethane, PTFE or FKM?
There is no universal best material. Suitability depends on the hydraulic fluid, duty cycle, pressure, temperature, dimensions, speed and the seal manufacturer's approved design.
Can a leaking cylinder be fixed by changing seals alone?
Sometimes, but not always. Scored rods, damaged bores, worn guides, misalignment or pressure spikes can cause repeat failures. A proper inspection should identify the root cause.
Do you have every size and seal profile available?
Availability, specific profiles, materials, delivery arrangements and prices require confirmation. Send the measurements or part number to request suitable options.
Need to identify a replacement seal?
